Alibaba Cloud Automotive China Translated from Chinese

XPeng (小鹏汽车)

XPeng needed an AI infrastructure base for autonomous-driving training, simulation, and connected-car data processing, but its data links were complex, GPU resources were underutilized, observability was incomplete, and the support stack had to serve many additional tools such as workflow orchestration and SRE systems. The company needed one cloud-native foundation that could run data, training, inference, and platform workloads together.

Reported impact

Business outcome

The Fuyao compute center gave XPeng a shared cloud-native base for autonomous-driving AI workloads and the surrounding platform services that support them. Alibaba Cloud improved GPU utilization, strengthened observability, reduced platform complexity, and established the compute foundation XPeng needs for large-scale training, simulation, and related inference tasks while lowering cost and operational friction.

Solution

XPeng and Alibaba Cloud built the Fuyao autonomous-driving compute center on a unified cloud-native stack centered on Container Service for Kubernetes (ACK). ACK runs data-processing and data-desensitization tasks, while Alibaba Cloud's cloud-native AI suite schedules and manages large-scale autonomous-driving training and simulation jobs. ACK GPU sharing and isolation improve accelerator utilization for those training workloads and also support NLP and automatic speech recognition inference tasks in XPeng's broader product organization. Around the runtime, Prometheus, ARMS, and SLS provide full-link observability, letting XPeng monitor both web or backend systems and model-serving or data pipelines through one telemetry surface. The same container platform also hosts support frameworks such as Airflow, Argo Workflows, Kubeflow Pipelines, and Arena, which means AI workloads and operational tooling share a common orchestration layer instead of being split across incompatible stacks.

Data flow

Vehicle and platform data-processing tasks run on ACK, where desensitized data and training inputs are prepared and then scheduled into the cloud-native AI suite for simulation and autonomous-driving training. Model-serving and auxiliary inference workloads share the same cloud runtime, while Prometheus, ARMS, and SLS capture platform telemetry so engineers can monitor stability, capacity, and service behavior end to end.

Solution architecture

7 components · 4 layers
  1. Compute
    • Cloud-native AI suite Schedules and manages large-scale autonomous-driving training and simulation jobs.
  2. Storage
    • Log Service SLS Stores and analyzes operational logs for the compute center and related services.
    • Object Storage Service (OSS) Provides shared storage for data and artifacts in the autonomous-driving stack.
    • Container Registry ACR Distributes container images used by the autonomous-driving and support workloads.
  3. Orchestration
    • Container Service for Kubernetes (ACK) Acts as the common runtime for autonomous-driving data processing, support tooling, and AI workloads.
  4. Governance
    • Prometheus Collects metrics across the cloud-native platform so performance and stability issues can be observed quickly.
    • Application Real-Time Monitoring Service (ARMS) Adds application-level tracing and monitoring for the service landscape around the compute center.

Architecture clues

  • ACK GPU sharing and isolation are explicitly used to improve utilization of accelerator resources.
  • ACK is used as the common runtime for AI workloads and non-AI support tools such as workflow engines and SRE systems.
  • Observability is built from Prometheus, ARMS, and SLS rather than isolated per-subsystem monitoring tools.
  • The cloud-native AI suite sits above ACK as the scheduler and management layer for large-scale autonomous-driving training and simulation.
