Solution

i GRID LAB built the R.E.A.L. New Energy Platform on AWS to predict and control surplus renewable power using IoT data and AI. Distributed Energy Resource data—including solar generation, demand, storage-battery status, and EV charging and discharging—is collected from edge devices with AWS IoT Greengrass and stored in the cloud for high-speed time-series processing with Amazon Timestream. AI functions migrated onto Amazon SageMaker then combine that operational data with external inputs such as electricity market prices to forecast excess solar generation, determine optimal EV charging and discharging timing, and create automated control scenarios. The result is a serverless-oriented platform that can move from proof of concept to commercialization quickly while supporting regional power-circulation use cases, logistics decarbonization, and broader green-transformation programs.

Data flow

Solar, demand, battery, and EV telemetry is collected from edge devices through AWS IoT Greengrass into the cloud, processed as time-series data in Amazon Timestream, combined with external information such as electricity market prices in SageMaker-based AI models, and then used to generate automatic control scenarios for distributed energy resources.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Ingest
    • AWS IoT Greengrass Collects data from edge devices connected to energy assets and facilities.
    • AWS IoT Core Supports the cloud-side IoT connectivity and messaging environment referenced by the case-study service list.
  2. Compute
    • Amazon SageMaker Runs the AI functions used for surplus-power prediction and automatic control decisions.
  3. Storage
    • Amazon Timestream Processes and stores large volumes of time-series energy data at high speed.

Architecture clues

  • Commercialized the platform in June 2022 after proof-of-concept and expansion phases.
  • Supports last-mile logistics decarbonization as a second-step use case.
  • Uses a serverless framework to shorten coding and documentation time.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value91/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity16/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale5/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence90%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability23/25
11 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance8/10
The publication date comes from publisher-controlled metadata.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
