Helios

Document Processing

Helios needed to reduce the documentation burden of discharge letters, which required clinicians to synthesize a patient's hospital stay across many files and systems, without sacrificing care quality or the information shared with external health care professionals.

Helios gained hands-on experience with GenAI in a hospital setting, unlocked previously unavailable data, and validated with health care professionals that LLM-generated discharge-letter drafts were promising enough to shape its wider digital strategy.

Solution

Helios worked with BCG on a generative-AI proof of concept for hospital discharge letters. The joint team first mapped more than 50 friction points in the existing workflow and then worked with Helios IT to acquire the patient data doctors review before writing a letter from the hospital information system. Because the project handled sensitive clinical data, BCG built the cardiology proof of concept in an on-the-premises environment. The implementation exported, pseudonymized, cleaned, and structured several thousand patient cases and more than 120,000 documents, then fine-tuned two open-source large language models on real patient data and historic discharge letters. The fine-tuned LLMs generated discharge-letter drafts that health care professionals validated, giving Helios a tested document-generation workflow and practical lessons for scaling GenAI in its broader digital strategy.

Data flow

Patient data that doctors would normally assemble from the hospital information system was exported, pseudonymized, cleaned, and structured alongside historic discharge letters. Those curated records were used to fine-tune open-source LLMs in an on-premises cardiology deployment. The models generated discharge-letter drafts, which health care professionals reviewed and validated before Helios planned broader rollout.

Solution architecture

  1. Ingest
    • hospital information system Provides the patient data doctors need to review before generating discharge letters.
  2. Compute
    • open-source large language models (LLMs) Were fine-tuned on real patient data and historic discharge letters to generate draft discharge letters.
  3. Governance
    • on-the-premises environment Keeps the cardiology proof of concept inside a privacy-sensitive hospital deployment while clinicians evaluate outputs.

Architecture clues

  • BCG built the proof of concept for the cardiology department in an on-the-premises environment because patient privacy was essential.
  • Health care professionals validated generated discharge letters and provided feedback on the outputs.
  • The implementation exported, pseudonymized, cleaned, and structured several thousand patient cases and more than 120,000 documents.
  • Two open-source LLMs were fine-tuned in several iterations using real patient data and historic discharge letters.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value66/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity16/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale5/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
