Cleanaway

Data Lake / Data Warehouse Modernization · Supply Chain Optimization

Cleanaway had operational, fleet and customer data spread across disparate systems, making aggregation manual, data quality inconsistent and insight delivery too slow for responsive operational decisions and sustainability goals.

Solution

Cleanaway built an enterprise lakehouse on the Databricks Data + AI Platform on Azure to unify operational data from waste collection, sorting, transport and customer systems that had been fragmented across multiple sources. GPS and connected fleet feeds, customer transactions, sales and marketing data are consolidated as a single source of truth, then standardized so business intelligence, analytics and machine learning teams work from the same foundation. Delta Lake underpins the shared lakehouse, MLflow is used to operationalize the first advanced analytics and machine learning models, and Power BI surfaces changes in business performance metrics. One of the first production models optimizes daily routes for more than 2,800 collection vehicles, while aggregated customer views help teams respond faster to demand and identify growth opportunities.

Data flow

GPS and connected fleet systems, customer transactions, sales and marketing data flow into the Databricks lakehouse, where Delta Lake stores the unified datasets and MLflow-managed models analyze performance and optimize routes. Power BI then serves aggregated customer and business metrics back to operational teams.

  1. Compute
    • Databricks Data + AI Platform Provides the central lakehouse where Cleanaway unifies operational, customer and fleet data for analytics and machine learning.
  2. Storage
    • Delta Lake Stores and organizes the shared lakehouse datasets that become Cleanaway's single source of truth.
  3. Serving
    • Power BI Presents business performance changes and other insights to decision-makers across the organization.
  4. Uncategorized
    • MLflow Operationalizes the first advanced analytics and machine learning models, including route optimization workloads.

Architecture clues

  • Built a lakehouse architecture as a single source of truth.
  • Supports AI and machine learning use cases from demand forecasting and ESG to predictive maintenance.
  • Uses MLflow and Delta Lake together with Power BI.

Evidence from the source

Aggregating data sets from several systems was an inefficient and manual process. This was compounded by inconsistent data quality, which resulted in unreliable insights.
Cleanaway has operationalized its first advanced analytics and machine learning models using MLflow and Delta Lake together with Power BI.
Cleanaway looked to Databricks to implement a lakehouse architecture that could function as a single source of truth by unifying disparate and siloed data sources.
One of its first models in production was used to assess and optimize the most efficient daily routes possible for Cleanaway's fleet of over 2,800 solid waste services collection vehicles.
The transformative impact of operationalizing advanced AI models for its fleet management systems has also encouraged Cleanaway to expand its route optimization abilities across its entire fleet of 5,000 vehicles.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence87%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
