Real-time Analytics

However, as Helen moves toward renewable energy, the system has become far more complex, relying on distributed energy resources like heat pumps, waste energy recovery, electric boilers and industrial by-products.

Helen has already decommissioned one coal plant and is on track to shut down their second by the spring of 2025. This shift will reduce the company’s carbon footprint by over 80%, a massive step toward achieving carbon neutrality

Solution

Helen, the energy company powering Helsinki and Finland’s second largest utility company. In the past few years, Helen has taken major steps away from coal to renewable energy sources and electrified heating. To manage the increasing complexity of a modern, sustainable energy system, Helen turned to AI and data-driven solutions. “The new energy system is an AI- and data-driven system,” Mikko Muurinen, Head of Data and AI at Helen, said. To manage this complexity, Helen has developed a centralized data and AI platform using Databricks. The platform powers a range of forecasting and optimization models, which play a critical role in steering energy production. These models process streaming data from hundreds of sensors and IoT devices, making real-time adjustments to maximize efficiency and minimize waste.

Data flow

Source system and event data lands in Databricks, is transformed in Delta Lake tables under Unity Catalog governance, with pipelines coordinated through Databricks orchestration and transformation services.

Solution architecture

6 components · 4 layers
  1. Compute
    • Databricks Data + AI Platform Provides the shared lakehouse environment for ingestion, engineering, analytics, and AI workloads.
    • Apache Spark Declarative Pipelines Runs declarative batch and streaming transformations with less custom pipeline code.
  2. Storage
    • Delta Lake Stores curated lakehouse tables used for reliable downstream analytics and AI workloads.
  3. Orchestration
    • Lakeflow Jobs Schedules and orchestrates recurring data pipelines and production jobs.
    • Lakeflow Coordinates ingestion and transformation workflows across the lakehouse.
  4. Governance
    • Unity Catalog Applies centralized governance, lineage, and access controls across shared data assets.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value91/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth20/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity16/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
