Solution

UK Power Networks migrated critical datasets from a fragmented on-premises warehouse estate to the Databricks Data + AI Platform so real-time grid operations and predictive planning could run from a single environment. Smart meter alerts for power outages and voltage changes are provisioned in Databricks and shared across internal teams, while a Network Load Forecasting and Estimation machine-learning model uses the same platform for collaborative development between data engineers, analysts and data scientists. Unity Catalog simplifies fine-grained access management and promotes clearer data ownership as volumes grow, and Delta Sharing replaces ad hoc emailed extracts and one-off file shares with governed distribution across teams and external collaborators. By putting ingestion, analysis and model building in one workspace, UK Power Networks gains the visibility needed to understand constraints and faults quickly while supporting lower-cost network expansion and net-zero innovation.

Data flow

Real-time smart-meter alerts for outages and voltage changes are ingested into Databricks and shared across teams using the same workspace where network-load models are developed. Unity Catalog governs access to the core datasets, and Delta Sharing distributes curated outputs to internal users and external collaborators without ad hoc file transfers.

Solution architecture

3 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • Databricks Data + AI Platform Acts as the shared environment for ingesting real-time smart-meter data, building models and serving analytics to teams.
  2. Serving
    • Delta Sharing Replaces siloed one-off sharing methods with governed internal and external data distribution.
  3. Governance
    • Unity Catalog Simplifies fine-grained access management and makes the utility's growing data landscape easier to govern.

Architecture clues

  • Migrated critical legacy data from an on-premises warehouse to the cloud.
  • Relies on a unified browser-based notebook interface for cross-team collaboration.
  • Uses a Network Load Forecasting and Estimation ML model in the same platform as real-time alert data.

Evidence from the source

Databricks played a key role in the provisioning of real-time smart meter alerts for power outages and voltage changes.
The data team leverages Delta Sharing to streamline data sharing across the organization, avoiding the silos that happen naturally with emailing or setting up one-off file shares.
UK Power Networks has rolled out a Network Load Forecasting and Estimation machine learning model.
Using Databricks Unity Catalog to refine and simplify fine-grained access management, UK Power Networks is simplifying navigation of their data landscape.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value85/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact15/25
    1 metric describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale5/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
