Caterpillar

Real-time Analytics

Caterpillar's finance organization relied on decades-old forecasting processes, hundreds of data sources and countless spreadsheets, leaving teams with limited time for strategic insight and making it difficult to improve forecast accuracy and scenario planning.

Solution

Caterpillar's Global Finance Services Division worked with EY to prove how AI- and ML-enabled forecasting could replace labor-intensive financial planning. EY began with a proof of concept that used a shadow copy of Caterpillar data plus selected external sources to build modeling tools and demonstrate better speed, accuracy and scenario analysis without disrupting live operations. The architecture combined EY Data Fabric and EY Intelligent Forecasting and Scenario Modeling with newly developed statistical models, scenario-planning workflows and a custom user interface. The new interface created a global repository for critical planning data and allowed finance teams to run more scenarios, inspect model outputs and override predictions when fresh information arrived. After the proof of concept, the team piloted the solution alongside Caterpillar's current process in one business unit, then used the results to expand advanced analytics capabilities for future finance forecasting work.

Data flow

Caterpillar finance data and selected external sources were copied into an EY modeling environment, where Data Fabric and Intelligent Forecasting and Scenario Modeling supported statistical forecast generation. Results flowed into a custom interface and scenario-planning process so teams could compare outcomes, apply overrides and reuse a central planning-data repository.

Solution architecture

  1. Ingest
    • EY Data Fabric Provides the data integration foundation for building and testing forecasting models on Caterpillar's finance data.
  2. Compute
    • EY Intelligent Forecasting and Scenario Modeling Supplies the modeling framework used to validate forecast accuracy and explore future scenarios.
    • statistical models Generate improved forecasts and scenario outputs from internal and external finance signals.
  3. Serving
    • custom user interface Lets finance teams execute planning scenarios, view model results and apply overrides when conditions change.
  4. Orchestration
    • scenario planning process Connects model outputs to business planning decisions and pilot operations inside finance.

Architecture clues

  • A pilot was created in one business unit and ran in parallel with Caterpillar's current process.
  • Statistical models and scenario-planning workflows were developed after the proof of concept demonstrated accuracy and speed.
  • The custom user interface created a global repository for critical planning data and allowed overrides to predictive models.
  • The proof of concept used a shadow copy of Caterpillar data plus selected external sources so new models could be tested safely.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence83%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability25/25
