GM needed to get developers productive on new assignments faster while keeping its engineering environment agile, policy-compliant, and secure across multiple projects.

About 400 GM developers have been using GitHub Copilot since February of 2023, and the response has been very positive.
“Often GitHub Copilot gets them 98% of the way there, and they only need to make small changes to finish it up.”

Solution

GM moved developer setup and project environments onto Microsoft's cloud developer stack so engineers can start work immediately without waiting on manual workstation setup. Microsoft Dev Box provides preconfigured cloud workstations with the tools, databases, and security settings each project needs, while Azure Deployment Environments spins up standardized services and test environments from self-service templates. GM combines those services with GitHub Copilot and GitHub Advanced Security so developers can write code faster, publish applications remotely, and keep changes inside a zero-trust model with real-time vulnerability analysis. The result is a code-to-cloud workflow that reduces onboarding friction while preserving project-level isolation, compliance, and rapid delivery.

Data flow

Developers start from a preconfigured Dev Box image, provision app services through Azure Deployment Environments, and publish code through GitHub-backed workflows where security checks run at check-in time.

  1. Serving
    • Microsoft Dev Box Provides preconfigured cloud development workstations so engineers can start new projects quickly.
    • GitHub Copilot Suggests code and helps developers contribute faster inside their existing engineering workflow.
  2. Orchestration
    • Azure Deployment Environments Automates creation of standardized application environments and services from self-service templates.
  3. Governance
    • GitHub Advanced Security Scans code for vulnerabilities at check-in so teams keep developer speed without dropping security controls.

Architecture clues

  • Azure Deployment Environments helps GM quickly spin up the services an app needs to run using standardized, self-service templates built for projects.
  • GitHub Advanced Security analyzes code in real-time and alerts developers to vulnerabilities at the moment they check in changes, while GitHub Copilot speeds contribution on new work.
  • Microsoft Dev Box centrally manages cloud-based development workstations that are preconfigured and ready-to-code with all the tools and security settings already provisioned for the developers’ needs.
  • The solution to GM’s need for agile setup and administration of developer environments was to move these operations to the Azure cloud.

Evidence from the source

A key example is Azure Deployment Environments, which GM uses to quickly spin up the services their app needs to run using standardized, self-service templates built for their projects.
Since July 2022, GM has used Microsoft Dev Box ... to centrally manage cloud-based development workstations that are preconfigured and ready-to-code with all the tools and security settings already provisioned for the developers’ needs.
To increase productivity and unlock new ideas and solutions, GM felt the challenge of getting developers up to speed on new assignments faster and more efficiently.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value90/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact15/25
    1 metric describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
