Researchers at the Austrian Academy of Sciences needed a way to analyze and reconstruct huge volumes of fragmented Ancient Greek texts that manual transcription and interpretation could not process quickly or at sufficient scale.

Hours, not years to decipher and restore ancient inscriptions

Reported impact

Business outcome

Apollo lets researchers reconstruct damaged Ancient Greek texts in hours instead of years, opens a path to working through more than one million unread papyri, and creates a foundation for semantic search and future handwritten inscription decipherment.

Solution

The Austrian Academy of Sciences is building Apollo, a custom large language model for Ancient Greek, to turn large-scale classical text analysis into an interactive AI workflow. The project combines a 600 million-word historical Greek corpus with tens of thousands of published inscriptions and papyri so the model can learn the linguistic variation needed to reconstruct missing passages and surface thematic links across collections. Mistral contributed model-building expertise and, with services partner Reply, helped establish a secure European-based infrastructure for training and use. Researchers can now apply Apollo to damaged texts that previously required years of manual transcription and interpretation, and the platform is being extended toward semantic search and handwritten inscription decipherment so scholars can move from recovery of fragments to broader historical analysis.

Data flow

Historical Greek texts, published inscriptions, and papyri feed Apollo's training corpus; researchers submit fragmentary or damaged text to the model, Apollo proposes restorations and semantic matches, and the outputs let scholars move into interpretation and broader historical analysis faster.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence87%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
