Major Canadian bank

Data Lake / Data Warehouse Modernization

A major Canadian bank needed to unify fragmented capital-markets data spread across dozens of applications and domains so teams could stop duplicating information and start producing trusted analytics and AI-driven insights faster.

Tens of millions of records flowed through these disparate systems daily.
The bank’s IT team oversaw 76 applications and 113 data domains in the Capital Markets division.
The division planned to migrate production workloads from MongoDB Enterprise Advanced to MongoDB Atlas in August 2024.

Reported impact

Business outcome

The bank modernized its capital-markets data foundation, accelerated integration of new data sources, reduced duplication, and created a resilient platform for analytics and AI initiatives that can move new ideas to market faster.

Solution

The capital-markets division of a major Canadian bank built a unified data hub on MongoDB Enterprise Advanced and MongoDB Atlas to replace siloed data stores spread across 76 applications and 113 data domains. The new architecture uses MongoDB’s flexible document model as the core of a data-mesh strategy so domain teams can own and publish data products while reducing duplication and governance drift. The bank consolidated client, market, transaction, and risk data into one hub, then integrated Databricks for machine learning, visualization, and other analytics workloads. MongoDB’s querying, indexing, replication, and multiregional failover support dashboards, recommender systems, and resilient disaster recovery, while Atlas security features such as SSO SAML and encryption helped satisfy enterprise compliance requirements. By treating MongoDB as the shared operational core, the bank created a faster route to trusted analytics across capital markets.

Data flow

Client, market, transaction, and risk data from dozens of applications are consolidated into a MongoDB-based data hub, queried and indexed for domain teams, then extended into Databricks and BI tooling for dashboards, machine learning, chatbots, and recommender workflows.

Solution architecture

3 components · 2 layers
  1. Compute
    • Databricks Consumes data from MongoDB to support machine learning, data visualization, and other advanced analytical use cases.
  2. Storage
    • MongoDB Enterprise Advanced Provides the initial production data-hub foundation for capital-markets data before workloads migrate to Atlas.
    • MongoDB Atlas Delivers the managed multiregional cloud database and security features the bank uses for its modernized data platform.

Architecture clues

  • Databricks is integrated for machine learning, data visualization, and advanced analytics.
  • MongoDB multiregional clusters use replication and failover for resilience and disaster recovery.
  • SSO SAML integration and encryption were important Atlas features for compliance acceptance.
  • The solution uses a data-mesh approach so domain teams can manage data as products.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence87%
