Solution
Choctaw Nation built an English-Choctaw translation system on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to replace manual translation work with a human-in-the-loop generative AI workflow. Translation requests arrive from the community, often by email, and the application also extracts bilingual pairs from historical PDFs and interview transcripts. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Data Science notebooks provide the development environment for tribal engineers and linguists to fine-tune Meta's Llama large language models on Choctaw linguistic data, using OCI GPU resources and Oracle's model-tuning capabilities inside a secure, containerized tenancy. At runtime, an AI agent uses the fine-tuned Llama model plus retrieval-augmented generation over dictionary resources and validated translation databases to propose translations. Oracle Database stores translation data and related AI functionality, while an Oracle APEX application manages request intake, routing, linguist review, approval, and publishing for tribal programs, digital platforms, and signage.
Data flow
Requests come in from community emails and source material such as historical PDFs and interview transcripts. The APEX application routes content into OCI-based workflows, where OCI Data Science notebooks and GPU-backed OCI resources fine-tune and run a Llama model. The agent retrieves context from dictionaries and validated translation databases, generates a draft translation, stores data in Oracle Database, and sends results to Choctaw linguists for review before approved translations are used in tribal programs, digital platforms, and signage.
