Conduent

Application Refactoring · Real-time Analytics · System Migration

Conduent—which processes nearly 13 million roadway tolling transactions every day and billions of customer-service interactions per year for 6 of the 10 largest US toll systems—needed faster transaction performance for one large US tolling client whose Microsoft-based front-end and Oracle Database back-end on premises could not keep up.

Solution

Conduent, a global digital services provider processing 13M tolling transactions daily across 6 major US toll systems, migrated a high-volume tolling customer's back-end database workload from on-premises Oracle Database to Oracle Database@Azure—co-locating OCI services inside Azure data centers. This architecture enabled customers to keep their Microsoft front-end stack (Dynamics 365, Azure) while Conduent provided Exadata performance on the back end, doubling application performance, reducing transaction latency, and maintaining Microsoft/Oracle licensing flexibility.

Data flow

Toll collection transactions from toll plazas and readers → Oracle Exadata Database on Azure → real-time account updates via Dynamics 365 front-end → Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP for financial posting; contact data stored in Dynamics 365.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • Oracle Exadata Database Service Optimized database engine delivering sub-millisecond query performance for 13M daily toll transactions and billing operations.
  2. Storage
    • Oracle Database@Azure High-performance transactional database for tolling and payment processing co-located in Azure data centers; doubles performance vs. on-premises and provides real-time toll account updates.
    • Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP Back-office financial transaction recording and reconciliation of toll revenue.
  3. Serving
    • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Front-end toll account management and customer-facing interface; customers replenish toll accounts through integrated portal.

Architecture clues

  • Distributed cloud architecture spanning Oracle Database@Azure, Exadata Cloud@Customer, and OCI public regions under one control plane
  • Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitments (MACC) used alongside Oracle licensing
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 front end integrated with Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP
  • Oracle Database@Azure: OCI Exadata services co-located inside Azure data centers
