Solution

PVO-Vesivoima implemented an AI- and machine-learning-based turbine control solution at its hydroelectric plants using Rockwell Automation's Allen-Bradley ControlLogix Compute module. The deployment ingests real-time operational data from plant operations and analyzes it locally on industrial computing hardware to identify the interactions that determine electricity-grid frequency. Those AI-derived control instructions are tightly integrated with the plant PLC environment, allowing the controller to adjust hydropower parameters and turbine behavior in response to grid-frequency conditions. The design uses rack-mounted and edge hardware rather than a cloud-first pattern, which supports the rapid response needed for reserve-market participation. Rockwell states that the module's close coupling with the PLC also improves cyber security. University of Oulu researchers contributed control-theory and mathematics expertise, while Klinkmann Automation supported industrial implementation.

Data flow

Real-time operational data from PVO-Vesivoima's hydroelectric plants is processed on the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix Compute module, where AI and machine learning identify the interactions affecting grid frequency; the resulting control instructions are then applied through the tightly integrated controller/PLC setup to adjust turbine operating parameters for reserve-market response.
