Solution

BBVA evolved its ADA global data and AI platform on AWS to industrialize machine learning development and deployment across the bank. Users start from an ADA catalog template that creates a new project and captures regulatory metadata such as model description, business owner, and model tier. The platform automatically provisions a dedicated GitHub repository with standardized code scaffolding for training, model registration, metrics, and metadata. Amazon SageMaker AI provides the core ML workflow foundation for training, batch inference, monitoring, and reusable pipeline components, while ephemeral pull-request environments let teams validate changes in isolated sandboxes before merge. GitHub Actions manages CI/CD transitions across development and production branches. SageMaker Model Registry enforces lifecycle stages and approval states, while Amazon EventBridge and AWS Lambda automate approval workflows, promotions, and production registration. ADA also notifies BBVA’s risk portal on key lifecycle events to keep governance and audit processes synchronized.

Data flow

A user selects an ADA MLOps template, which captures regulatory metadata and provisions a GitHub repository with standardized scaffolding. Teams build and test training, batch inference, and monitoring pipelines on Amazon SageMaker AI, including ephemeral pull-request sandboxes created by GitHub Actions. Models, metrics, and metadata are registered in SageMaker Model Registry, then GitHub Actions, Amazon EventBridge, and AWS Lambda coordinate approvals, promotion, and production registration while notifying BBVA’s risk platform.

Solution architecture

7 components · 4 layers
  1. Compute
    • Amazon SageMaker AI It underpins the automated ML workflow for training, batch inference, monitoring, and reusable pipeline composition.
    • AWS Lambda It executes automation in the approval workflow and model registration path for production promotion.
  2. Orchestration
    • ADA BBVA’s global data and AI platform provides the catalog, centralized access, and standardized foundation for ML project creation and deployment.
    • GitHub Actions It runs CI/CD workflows tied to pull requests and environment branches, including ephemeral validation environments and promotion between development and production.
    • Amazon EventBridge It participates in the model approval workflow and triggers production registration steps after approval.
  3. Governance
    • SageMaker Model Registry It manages model lifecycle stages, approval states, auditability, and programmatic governance enforcement.
  4. Uncategorized
    • GitHub A dedicated repository is automatically provisioned for each project to hold standardized code, model registration logic, metrics, and metadata.

Architecture clues

  • Auto-approval is allowed when a production-approved model is retrained without material pipeline changes
  • Automated cleanup stops executions, deletes model versions, removes pipeline definitions, and cleans up model package groups
  • Ephemeral pull-request environments provision isolated temporary training pipelines and model packages
  • Global deployment across BBVA
  • Model lifecycle stages are Development, QA, PreProduction, and Production

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence94%
  • Source authority25/25
The deployment is described by the adopting organization or a government source.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    8 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
