Combining multiple data modalities is foundational to achieving this goal and discovering crucial links for treating them,” says Dr. “The challenge lies in making multiomic data jointly accessible with other datasets, and then using technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning for better diagnosis and treatment.” In 2017, CHOP launched Arcus , a suite of tools and services for CHOP’s research community that links biological, clinical, research, and environmental data.

Solution

Through the launch of its omics initiative, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) envisions medicine taking the form of personalized treatments that are based on patients’ genotypes, or unique genomes. Researchers and doctors at CHOP are bringing this vision to life by merging de-identified clinical data with omics data—sequences of DNA, RNA, and proteins—and analyzing it using machine learning, within a privacy framework that keeps genomic and clinical data safe and aligned with industry standards. The size, rapid accumulation, complexity, and heterogeneity of omics data pose difficulties in its management and analysis. To facilitate scientific discovery, the CHOP team has built a secure framework on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using AWS HealthOmics , a fully managed service that healthcare and life sciences organizations use to store, query, and analyze genomic, transcriptomic, and other omics data.

Data flow

Using AWS HealthOmics to Cut Months from CHOP’s Gene Search CHOP uses AWS HealthOmics to analyze and generate insights from multiomic data—giving researchers more time for unlocking scientific discoveries to improve pediatric treatment and cure diseases—using joint variant calling on omics in addition to variant calling.

Evidence from the source

Combining multiple data modalities is foundational to achieving this goal and discovering crucial links for treating them,” says Dr.
Ingo Helbig, attending neurologist and scientific director of Project Omics at CHOP.
Using AWS HealthOmics to Unify, Share, and Analyze CHOP’s Data at Scale CHOP was the first US hospital dedicated to pediatric healthcare, and the CHOP Research Institute has advanced breakthrough pediatric treatments for rare diseases.
“Getting a comprehensive view of our patients is crucial to delivering the best possible care, based on the most innovative research.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value51/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth15/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity16/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale0/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence85%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance8/10
The publication date comes from publisher-controlled metadata.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
