Athena Pathway

Real-time Analytics

Athena Pathway needed a way to prepare its sailing team for elite competition with more scenarios and tactical insight than on-water practice alone could provide before the inaugural Women's America's Cup.

The digital-twin training system gave Athena Pathway many more practice scenarios than physical sailing time alone, helping the team reach the decisive final stage of the Women's America's Cup and lose by only seconds.

Solution

Athena Pathway used Bain's AI and analytics support to build digital twins of its AC40 yachts for race preparation. Customized deep-learning AI models ingested 6 million observations from sensors mounted across the boats and turned those inputs into virtual training sessions that could simulate many different race conditions. That architecture let the team extend physical practice with a software layer that modeled yacht behavior, tested tactics, and estimated the best strategy for changing sailing situations. Sensor data flowed from the boats into the deep-learning models, the digital twins reproduced likely responses under new conditions, and the outputs informed training and race strategy decisions. The source does not describe a separate storage tier or model-serving stack, but it is clear that the implementation was already being used as part of the team's competitive preparation rather than as a concept demonstration.

Data flow

Sensors on the AC40 yachts collect observations that feed customized deep-learning AI models. Those models power digital twins, which generate virtual training sessions and scenario analysis so Athena Pathway can compare tactics and identify optimal racing strategies before going back on the water.
