Solution

Imperial War Museums, Capgemini, and Google Cloud built a generative AI pipeline to turn a hard-to-search oral history archive into a searchable, cited research experience. Capgemini created IWM’s Google Cloud AI environment and developed a workflow that transcribes and translates audio recordings, extracts metadata, and uses Gemini 2.0 to generate interview summaries plus key people, places, and events. The application lets users search interviews through text transcripts and metadata, listen while reading synchronized transcripts, and use an “Ask a question” interface to submit natural-language queries against interviews. Responses are grounded in the source material and show citations so researchers can trust where answers came from. Prompt engineering and model tuning helped the team handle accents, multiple languages, military terminology, and inconsistent recording quality while scaling a job the museum estimated would otherwise have taken more than 20 years manually.

Data flow

Audio recordings are transcribed and translated in a Google Cloud pipeline, metadata is extracted and passed into Gemini 2.0 for summaries and key-entity analysis, and the resulting transcripts and metadata power searchable interfaces plus the Ask a question experience with cited answers.

Solution architecture

3 components · 2 layers
  1. Compute
    • Google Cloud Provides the AI environment and processing foundation for the museum’s oral history pipeline.
    • Gemini 2.0 Generates interview summaries and extracts key people, places, events, and answerable insights from transcripts.
  2. Serving
    • Ask a question Lets users submit natural-language questions against interviews and receive cited answers from the archive content.

Architecture clues

  • Answers show reasoning and direct citations to transcript passages
  • First use of AI on Google Cloud for IWM
  • Prompt engineering handled accents, languages, and recording quality challenges
  • Users can listen to recordings while viewing synchronized transcripts

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence91%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency10/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
