Bayer Crop Science

Enterprise Knowledge Search

Bayer Crop Science needed agronomic advisors to answer highly technical crop and product questions faster, but the expertise was spread across decades of agronomy content, product research, proprietary insights, spreadsheets and tables that were difficult to search, synthesize and apply in the moment.

Solution

Bayer Crop Science worked with EY professionals and Microsoft to build a proof-of-concept generative AI assistant for agronomic advisors. The team grounded a large language model in Microsoft Azure with decades of aggregated agronomy content, product research data and proprietary insights, then translated legacy spreadsheets and tabular sources into structures the model could understand. Additional algorithms reformatted information from different sources into digestible data so the assistant could answer detailed natural-language agronomy and product questions. Retrieval Augmented Generation and prompt engineering were used to retrieve relevant context in real time and improve response quality, while an automated validation process compared outputs against subject-matter experts and open-source LLMs. The system gave Bayer a reusable knowledge layer that could support employees, partners and customer-facing interactions.

Data flow

Agronomy content, product research data, proprietary insights, spreadsheets and tables were normalized and loaded into an Azure-based LLM stack. RAG retrieves relevant passages at query time, prompt engineering shapes the answer, and automated validation compares outputs with open-source models and subject-matter experts before advisors use the results.

Solution architecture

5 components · 4 layers
  1. Compute
    • Microsoft Azure Hosts the environment where the agronomy-focused GenAI stack and grounded LLM were built and tested.
    • large language model (LLM) Processes agronomy questions and generates responses using Bayer's grounded content.
  2. Serving
    • GenAI system Provides the advisor-facing question answering experience over Bayer's agronomy and product knowledge.
  3. Orchestration
    • Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) Dynamically retrieves relevant agronomy context so the assistant can answer questions in real time.
  4. Governance
    • automated validation process Scores and checks answers against subject-matter experts and other models before broader rollout.

Architecture clues

  • An automated validation process compared the system's responses with open-source LLMs and subject-matter experts.
  • Legacy spreadsheets and tables were translated into structures the GenAI system could comprehend.
  • RAG and prompt engineering were used together to tailor responses to detailed agronomy questions.
  • The LLM was built in the Microsoft Azure environment and grounded with decades of agronomy content, product research data and proprietary insights.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence85%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability25/25
12 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance0/10
The publication date has no documented provenance.
  • Source transparency10/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
