Bower

Customer Service Automation

Bower needed to move beyond barcode-dependent recycling guidance so users anywhere could identify waste items, understand local disposal options, and keep the app learning as it expanded globally.

Reported impact

Business outcome

Bower scaled recycling guidance to a global audience, reduced manual data entry, and made its app capable of recognizing far more items than a barcode-only workflow could support.

Solution

Bower uses Google Cloud to address this challenge: Bower needed to move beyond barcode-dependent recycling guidance so users anywhere could identify waste items, understand local disposal options, and keep the app learning as it expanded globally. Vertex AI hosts and serves the machine learning models Bower uses to identify waste items from photos, serving as the serving layer. Compute Engine provides Cloud GPU capacity for training the image-identification model at global scale, serving as the compute layer. Vision AI performs object detection to identify item type, material, estimated mass, and brand from user-submitted images, serving as the compute layer. Gemini processes unstructured user input to evaluate recycling drop-off points and continuously enriches the global waste knowledge base, serving as the compute layer.

Data flow

Users upload a photo, Vision AI and the Vertex AI model identify the waste item and its characteristics, Compute Engine GPU training keeps the recognition model current, and Gemini processes additional user input about recycling locations so the knowledge base expands market by market.

Architecture clues

  • The app tracks estimated CO2 savings as part of the recognition workflow
  • The platform processed more than 136 million waste items while expanding to over 170 countries
  • Users validate new information with thumbs up or thumbs down feedback to keep the models improving

Evidence from the source

Bower used Vertex AI, leveraging high-speed Cloud GPUs with Compute Engine, to develop and train an ML model that allows users to identify any waste item, simply by uploading a photo.
Now, with Gemini, Bower can process unstructured user input to evaluate recycling drop-off points.
Thanks to our work with Google Cloud, we scaled our app globally from five to more than 170 countries in just six months.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value70/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth20/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence75%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability23/25
11 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence15/20
    3 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance0/10
The publication date has no documented provenance.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
