Predictive Maintenance

Boston Dynamics needed a safer and more scalable way for industrial customers to inspect assets and identify anomalies because manual rounds and fixed sensors are costly, risky, and hard to scale across complex sites.

Solution

Boston Dynamics partnered with IBM to combine the Spot mobile robot with IBM edge analytics and asset-management software for industrial inspection. Spot carries cameras and sensors through environments that are difficult, noisy, or unsafe for people, collecting telemetry that IBM analytics process directly on the robot rather than sending everything to the cloud. IBM Maximo Application Suite interprets the data, identifies likely anomalies, and can automatically generate work orders with recommended next steps, while IBM Consulting supports implementation for customer environments. Red Hat technology makes the analytics portable across hybrid-cloud deployments, so the joint solution can be rolled out without instrumenting every machine in a facility. By shifting intelligence to a roaming edge device, the architecture reduces cloud-storage requirements, lowers data-movement costs, and helps operators catch issues before they become major outages.

Data flow

Spot gathers images and telemetry from equipment in the field, IBM analytics on the robot process the data at the edge, Maximo interprets anomalies and opens work orders when needed, and maintenance teams act on the resulting insight.

Solution architecture

4 components · 4 layers
  1. Ingest
    • Spot Traverses industrial sites to capture visual and sensor data from assets that are hard or unsafe for workers to inspect manually.
  2. Compute
    • IBM Maximo Application Suite Analyzes the collected telemetry, interprets anomalies, and can generate maintenance work orders with suggested next steps.
  3. Serving
    • Red Hat technology Helps package and deploy the analytics stack cost-effectively in hybrid-cloud environments.
  4. Orchestration
    • IBM Consulting Provides implementation and support services for deploying the joint solution in customer environments.

Architecture clues

  • Analytics run on the robot in real time instead of relying on separate cloud analysis for every event.
  • IBM is extending the joint offer with 5G and additional analytics such as acoustics and compositional analysis.
  • Maximo can automatically create work orders when Spot identifies an anomaly.

Evidence from the source

"Spot can go around a site, identify a problem and, using Maximo, automatically generate a work order"
"The analytics happens on the robot in real time, reducing the need for separate cloud data storage and analysis."
"reduces costs associated with IoT instrumentation"

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence82%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence15/20
    3 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
