IBM Human Resources

Enterprise Knowledge Search · Real-time Analytics

IBM HR needed to make people analytics easier for business leaders and non-technical users because dashboard growth alone still left managers dependent on analysts to interpret metrics, filters, and workforce context.

Solution

IBM piloted watsonx BI to turn HR analytics into a conversational experience built on top of the organization's existing people-data foundation. HR data had already been consolidated into a lakehouse and exposed through self-service dashboards, but watsonx BI adds a governed semantic layer and centralized metric catalog so users can ask workforce questions in natural language instead of locating the right report and applying filters manually. The system shows its work by surfacing the data sources, columns, filters, and SQL behind each answer, which helps users refine questions and trust the results. Existing Cognos reporting assets and the enterprise lakehouse are reused rather than replaced, which keeps the new experience aligned with existing governance and reduces duplication. This architecture allows leaders to explore talent questions contextually, while HR teams spend less time answering repetitive requests and more time on strategic analysis.

Data flow

Workforce data from IBM's HR lakehouse is interpreted through a governed semantic layer in watsonx BI, which translates natural-language questions into metric logic and SQL, retrieves the relevant data, and returns explainable answers to business leaders and managers.

    • IBM watsonx BI Provides the conversational BI agent, semantic layer, and explainable answer generation for people analytics.
    • IBM Cognos Supplies existing reporting frameworks that watsonx BI reuses as part of the governed analytics foundation.

Architecture clues

  • The pilot began in Q3 2025 and reused the existing lakehouse and Cognos assets.
  • The semantic layer embeds HR logic such as metrics, filters, and population definitions.
  • The system exposes the SQL and data sources used to answer each question.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
