IBM Tax Organization

Document Processing · Security and Compliance

IBM's tax organization needed to automate global compliance work because inaccessible and incomplete data made tax-return preparation and document validation too manual across many countries and source systems.

Solution

IBM's tax organization worked with EY and IBM Ecosystem Engineering to build AI-assisted tax-compliance workflows on watsonx. IBM watsonx.data created a unified data layer across diverse global source systems, while IBM watsonx.ai powered detect-and-correct processing over business documents such as invoices and broader withholding-tax determinations. EY.ai for tax packaged the domain logic on top of the IBM AI stack, and the IBM team added data controls plus reconciliation checkpoints into each data flow so the new automation could be trusted in production. The initial MVP focused on three use cases, but the architecture is broader: a shared lake-like data foundation feeds AI models, validation routines, and compliance workflows that can scale across IBM's 170-country footprint. By moving large-volume tax processing onto a governed AI platform, the organization reduced dependence on manual harmonization and freed specialists to focus on higher-value tax work.

Data flow

Tax and invoice data from many source systems flows into watsonx.data, watsonx.ai applies detect-and-correct and other compliance logic, and the resulting outputs feed EY.ai for tax workflows supported by reconciliation checkpoints and controls.

Solution architecture

3 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • IBM watsonx.ai Runs the detect-and-correct AI logic used for invoice validation and other tax-compliance tasks.
  2. Storage
    • IBM watsonx.data Creates the unified data layer across varied global tax and business-data sources.
  3. Serving
    • EY.ai for tax Packages the tax-specific AI workflows built with the IBM watsonx stack.

Architecture clues

  • Data controls and reconciliation checkpoints were built into each source-to-target flow.
  • IBM used the tax organization as a client-zero environment for the watsonx stack.
  • The solution combines a unified data layer with multimodel AI for many countries and document types.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence84%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence15/20
    3 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
