Solution

INAIL worked with IBM Consulting and IBM Client Engineering to build a virtual assistant for its Bandi ISI funding process. The pilot used unstructured content such as manuals, FAQs, prior tickets, requests, and official documentation to power a conversational support layer embedded in the web application companies use to access the funding procedure. IBM watsonx Assistant acts as the orchestration layer between IBM Watson Discovery and IBM watsonx.ai: Discovery indexes the documentation and identifies the text passages likely to contain answers, while watsonx.ai runs the Mixtral 8x7B Mistral model to generate response text grounded in those indexed materials. This architecture lets applicants ask both general and specific questions about the call, eligibility, and operating procedures, while INAIL can standardize contact-center responses and later extend the same knowledge base into automated verification during post-approval review phases.

Data flow

Applicants submit natural-language questions in the Bandi ISI web application, watsonx Assistant orchestrates the request, Watson Discovery retrieves relevant passages from manuals and prior support content, and the Mistral model on watsonx.ai generates the final response for applicants or contact-center staff.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • IBM watsonx.ai Hosts the generative AI model used to produce answers from the indexed documentation.
    • Mistral Provides the Mixtral 8x7B large language model used to generate grounded response text.
  2. Serving
    • IBM Watson Discovery Indexes manuals, FAQs, tickets, and documentation so the assistant can retrieve grounded source passages.
  3. Orchestration
    • IBM watsonx Assistant Orchestrates the conversational workflow and routes user questions across the answer-generation stack.

Architecture clues

  • INAIL plans to expand the same knowledge base into automated verification during review phases.
  • The assistant is embedded directly in the application used to access the funding process.
  • The pilot used unstructured support artifacts rather than a manually curated FAQ alone.

Evidence from the source

24x7 assistance, eliminating wait times and the risk of missed deadlines.
50% rise in applications
Finally, the gen AI Mistral LLM model (mixtral8-7B) on watsonx.ai was used to engage the conversation and generate answer texts
IBM Watson Discovery was used as a documentation collector and cognitive engine available to the overall application.
The solution involved IBM watsonx Assistant, which was able to understand and address various questions, general or specific, by leveraging multiple features and acting as the orchestrator between IBM Watson Discovery platform and IBM watsonx.ai AI studio.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
