Solution

Nationwide partnered with IBM Consulting to build a society-wide AI strategy and operating model anchored in an AI Centre of Expertise powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. The CoE combines an operations team that manages the AI lifecycle, a cross-functional council that evaluates and approves use cases, and a delivery function that builds solutions with large language models and enterprise data. IBM helped Nationwide define technical patterns, training, communications, governance, and risk-management processes so new AI capabilities could be assessed and deployed through a common framework rather than project by project. With that foundation in place, Nationwide began developing practical solutions for contract management, quality assurance, operational reporting, and colleague support, including tools that help staff answer customer queries faster. The architecture is a governed operating layer for AI adoption across legal, procurement, technology, security, and data teams.

Data flow

Enterprise data and candidate use cases enter the AI Centre of Expertise, where cross-functional governance reviews them, Azure OpenAI Service powers solution development, and approved patterns are delivered back into operational roles such as contract management, reporting, and customer-support workflows.

    • IBM Consulting Helped Nationwide define the AI strategy, governance model, CoE design, and delivery principles for regulated AI adoption.

Architecture clues

  • IBM helped redesign training, communications, governance, and risk management around AI adoption.
  • The CoE includes lifecycle operations, a cross-functional council, and a delivery function.
  • The platform includes patterns for speech-to-text and PII redaction in transcript workflows.

Evidence from the source

Nationwide began by establishing a society-wide AI strategy and operating model, culminating in the creation of an AI Centre of Expertise (CoE) with the support of IBM Consulting and powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.
The centre also supported Nationwide’s readiness for gen AI by helping set up the gen AI platform, define training and communications, redesign risk management and governance
The centre consisted of an operations team to drive the AI lifecycle, a cross-functional council to evaluate use cases, and a delivery function to build solutions using large language models (LLMs) and enterprise data.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value71/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity16/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence87%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
