Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy

Real-time Analytics

Siemens Gamesa needed to cut blade-manufacturing errors and reduce rework because manual inspection and a partially automated laser-grid system could not deliver the precision, throughput, or standardization needed across expanding factories.

Solution

Siemens Gamesa and IBM Consulting turned a visual quality-control concept into a production-ready computer-vision system for turbine-blade manufacturing. IBM helped the Digital Ventures Lab design a camera array above each manufacturing station, process video on Microsoft Azure IoT Edge, and apply machine-learning models in real time so the laser grid system could validate fiberglass placement and later detect foreign objects in the mold. Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and Azure DevOps supported the cloud engineering and model lifecycle, while IBM Garage methodology accelerated iterative delivery from design to MVP in Aalborg. The architecture kept feedback close to the production line: images are analyzed with minimal latency at the edge, then the resulting guidance is projected back into the manufacturing process so technicians can act immediately. By standardizing the digital workflow on Azure and scaling it plant by plant, Siemens Gamesa created a reusable manufacturing-intelligence platform rather than a one-off inspection tool.

Data flow

Cameras mounted above the blade stations capture video, Azure IoT Edge runs machine-learning inference on the footage, the laser-grid system returns placement guidance and defect alerts to technicians, and Azure services manage the broader model and delivery lifecycle.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Hosts and manages the machine-learning models that validate fiberglass placement and detect defects.
  2. Serving
    • Microsoft Azure IoT Edge Processes video close to the production line so model feedback can be delivered with minimal latency.
  3. Orchestration
    • IBM Consulting Co-designed the manufacturing-quality solution and implemented the production-ready MVP with Siemens Gamesa.
    • Microsoft Azure DevOps Supports the cloud engineering and delivery workflow for the manufacturing-intelligence solution.

Architecture clues

  • A distributed camera array and edge-computing stack were chosen instead of a smaller number of high-resolution cameras.
  • The platform is designed to be replicated across multiple factories and new lines.
  • Video is processed at the edge so feedback can be returned to technicians in real time.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence82%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence15/20
    3 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
