Solution
Target built a multichannel conversational commerce implementation that lets shoppers discover products, assemble baskets, authenticate, and complete purchases inside third-party AI interfaces instead of starting on Target.com alone. In Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app, Target uses Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) as the common language that lets Google agents surface Target listings, pass selected items into checkout, and optionally transfer carts to the Target site. In Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Checkout and Target account linking connect the chat flow to Target Circle benefits so members can log in, apply discounts, confirm payment, and order without leaving Copilot. In ChatGPT, the Target app exposes Target's full assortment, multi-item basket building, fulfillment options, and account-based purchasing, extending conversational shopping to fresh food, Drive Up, Order Pickup, shipping, and personalized recommendations.
Data flow
A shopper asks for product advice in Google Search/Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or ChatGPT. The AI surface returns Target assortment recommendations; UCP or account-linking passes selected items into Target's commerce flow, where the shopper signs into a Target account, applies Target Circle benefits, confirms payment, and submits the order. Depending on the channel, the basket can stay in-chat or move to Target.com, then route to shipping, Drive Up, or Order Pickup.
