Supply Chain Optimization

Warehouse staff handling KION spare parts orders faced intense end-of-day workload peaks because containers could not be closed until it was clear whether customers would add more items before the shipping cutoff, creating time pressure, uneven work distribution, and a complicated handoff to shipping.

Business outcome

The pilot let orders be released for shipping earlier, distributed packing work more evenly through the day, reduced stress during peak periods, improved resource use, and made overall warehouse operations smoother.

Solution

Urban-Transporte, KION Group’s in-house logistics provider, built a machine-learning workflow to predict whether a spare-parts order is complete enough for packing before the daily cutoff. The core component is an Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model trained on historical order data and operational variables such as time of day, day of week, public holidays, order activity, and individual ordering behavior. The model computes the probability that more items will still be added to a container. That prediction is then served to warehouse staff through a real-time display that recommends whether a box can already be closed. The source describes the data inputs and real-time decision support layer, but does not name a separate storage platform or orchestration tool. In practice, the system turns live order activity plus past fulfillment patterns into earlier packing decisions, smoother shipping preparation, and less operational stress on the warehouse floor.

Data flow

Historical order data and operational variables such as time of day, holidays, real-time order activity, and individual ordering behavior feed the XGBoost model, which calculates the probability of more items arriving for a container. The prediction is shown to warehouse employees in real time so they can decide whether to close the box and release it for packing and shipping.

Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact15/25
    1 metric describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
