Pentatonic

Brands and retailers lacked infrastructure to identify, value, transact on, and learn from physical products after the first sale, leaving returns, trade-ins, repairs, resale, and post-sale product data fragmented across disconnected manual processes.

Solution

Pentatonic built an AI-powered commerce stack for physical goods and uses Mastercard Move for payouts. Consumers initiate the workflow by pointing a phone at an item or placing it on an in-store device; in stores, the Physical Intelligence Node (PIN) captures images and sensor data and runs on-device AI models to identify, grade, and value multiple products simultaneously. Pentatonic’s cloud platform then combines computer vision outputs with real-time market data to generate instant offers, execute transactions, route goods to resale, refurbishment, refill, or recycling, and return analytics to brands. The Thing Event System (TES) acts as an event-driven governance layer, capturing and verifying every agent-initiated transaction in real time to provide traceability and observability. Structured product and consumer feedback data is fed back into brand commerce and marketing systems, while Mastercard Move enables near-instant digital payment to complete the circular-commerce loop.

Data flow

Product data enters through consumer phones or the in-store PIN, where images and sensor signals are analyzed by AI to identify and grade items. Pentatonic’s platform enriches that with real-time market data, generates an offer, records the event in TES, triggers digital payout through Mastercard Move, routes the item to its next destination, and sends structured ownership, performance, and preference data back to brand commerce and marketing systems.

Solution architecture

4 components · 4 layers
  1. Compute
    • Physical Intelligence Node (PIN) Uses cameras, sensors, and on-device AI models in stores to identify, grade, and value products and trigger real-time transactions at the edge.
  2. Serving
    • Mastercard Move Provides near-instant money movement so accepted trade-ins and return-deposit flows can be paid out digitally.
  3. Orchestration
    • Pentatonic cloud platform Combines computer vision outputs, market data, transaction logic, routing, and analytics to run the product trade-in and circular-commerce workflow.
  4. Governance
    • Thing Event System (TES) Captures and verifies each agent-initiated transaction in real time to provide a transparent, verifiable record with observability and traceability.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value96/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity16/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence97%
  • Source authority25/25
The deployment is described by the adopting organization or a government source.
