Solution

Avila built its grant-intelligence platform on MongoDB Atlas so it could combine structured grant databases, unstructured NOFO PDFs, and user-uploaded planning documents inside one flexible operational store. Atlas acts as the foundational document and file repository, while MongoDB Atlas Search handles lexical retrieval across aggregated grant data and MongoDB Atlas Vector Search provides the semantic matching needed for AI-assisted discovery and RAG. The platform continuously matches user priorities against new funding opportunities, extracts narrative structure, compliance requirements, and required forms from unstructured notices, and then uses OpenAI and Anthropic model calls to help generate proposal drafts. Because Atlas supports dynamic schema changes, Avila can onboard new grant sources and data shapes without slowing development. That lets the startup operate without a dedicated database team while still delivering an end-to-end workflow from search to application writing on a single data foundation.

Data flow

Grant data from sources such as grants.gov and disparate state sites is stored in MongoDB Atlas, searched lexically with MongoDB Atlas Search and semantically with MongoDB Atlas Vector Search, then combined with user-uploaded planning documents so OpenAI and Anthropic model calls can draft NOFO summaries and proposal narratives.

Solution architecture

5 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • OpenAI Supplies model calls for AI-assisted research and proposal-writing workflows.
    • Anthropic Supplies additional model calls for proposal-writing and retrieval-augmented generation workflows.
  2. Storage
    • MongoDB Atlas Stores grant source data, user documents, and the operational records behind Avila's end-to-end platform.
  3. Serving
    • MongoDB Atlas Search Runs keyword retrieval across aggregated grant opportunities and related content.
    • MongoDB Atlas Vector Search Provides semantic matching for grant discovery, NOFO processing, and RAG-based proposal support.

Architecture clues

  • Avila runs without a dedicated database team.
  • NOFO PDFs are converted into structured fields such as narrative requirements and compliance needs.
  • New opportunities are pushed to users weekly.
  • The MVP shipped in four weeks thanks to MongoDB's dynamic schema adaptation.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence79%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance0/10
The publication date has no documented provenance.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
