Hippo Innovations

Application Refactoring · Marketing Personalization

Hippo Innovations needed to replace rigid relational databases and bolt-on search services with a simpler platform that could support highly variable product data, heavy e-commerce traffic, and new AI-driven search and personalization features without growing operational overhead.

"30% lower query latency"
"8x larger document sizes"
"adapt and scale 3x faster"
"over 1.5 billion secure API calls per month"

Solution

Hippo Innovations consolidated StoreHippo's data and AI stack on MongoDB Atlas after moving away from self-managed databases and bolt-on services. Atlas holds the platform's operational data, including product catalogs, orders, inventory, customer accounts, and payment information, in tenant-isolated databases that can scale across regions and clouds. MongoDB Search handles full-text retrieval, autocomplete, facets, and relevance tuning against the same live documents, eliminating separate index-remapping and sync logic with external search engines. MongoDB Vector Search and Voyage AI extend that same data layer into semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation workflows, while MongoDB Data API lets front-end code query data over HTTPS and MongoDB Atlas Charts exposes campaign-performance visualizations to merchants. Multi-region replication and Atlas operations let the team move customer data with no downtime and ship features faster.

Data flow

Merchant catalog, order, inventory, payment, and customer data land in tenant-specific MongoDB Atlas databases. MongoDB Search queries those live documents for autocomplete, facets, and relevance tuning; MongoDB Vector Search plus Voyage AI create embeddings and support semantic and RAG retrieval; MongoDB Data API exposes data over HTTPS to client features, and MongoDB Atlas Charts surfaces campaign insights to merchants.

Solution architecture

6 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • Voyage AI Generates embeddings that Hippo Innovations uses with Vector Search and RAG workflows.
  2. Storage
    • MongoDB Atlas Stores StoreHippo's tenant-isolated operational data and provides the managed, multi-region database foundation for the platform.
  3. Serving
    • MongoDB Search Runs product search, autocomplete, facets, and relevance tuning directly on live StoreHippo data.
    • MongoDB Vector Search Adds semantic retrieval on top of StoreHippo's operational data for AI-powered search experiences.
    • MongoDB Atlas Charts Surfaces promotional-campaign and merchant-facing visualizations from StoreHippo data.
    • MongoDB Data API Lets front-end code query StoreHippo data directly from the client browser over HTTPS.

Architecture clues

  • Each merchant is provisioned with its own single-tenant MongoDB database and search engine for security and performance isolation.
  • Multi-cloud and multi-region deployment policies are used to place data closer to customers and satisfy residency requirements.
  • Search and database lookups now run in a single application call instead of separate database and search-engine queries.
  • Vector search and automatic embeddings are used in StoreHippo's retrieval-augmented generation pipelines.

Evidence from the source

"I'd estimate running in MongoDB Atlas saves around 10% of our total engineering cycles, which we can now reinvest in innovation."
"Separate queries that were previously run independently against the bolt-on search engine and database are now run in a single application call, leading to 30% lower query latency."
"The StoreHippo platform offered customers a choice of using the Algolia or Azure Cognitive search engines, but this made the technology stack complex and costly."
"The platform serves over 1.5 billion secure API calls per month."
"With a few clicks in the Atlas UI, we can move customer data on-demand, with no downtime."

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    5 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence82%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability23/25
11 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance0/10
The publication date has no documented provenance.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
