Texas A&M University

Texas A&M needed to give researchers across seven institutions access to shared GPU infrastructure for AI and simulation, but isolated workstations, slow grant-funded clusters, and long queues were limiting drug-discovery throughput and broader scientific competitiveness.

Business outcome

VISION identified more than 22,000 drug candidates in one week versus roughly 120 from earlier efforts, raised validation hit rates from 1 percent to 10 percent up to 80 percent to 90 percent, runs at 95 percent to 98 percent utilization, and can support 500 to 1,500 concurrent users while avoiding more than $1 million of cloud cost on a single project.

Solution

Texas A&M built VISION as a shared DGX SuperPOD environment so frontier-scale compute is available as a university service instead of a lab-by-lab exception. The platform combines nearly 760 NVIDIA Hopper GPUs with DDN storage, Base Command Manager for cluster operations, DCGM telemetry for utilization visibility, Slurm scheduling, an 11-tier quality-of-service model, and dedicated Kubernetes nodes for inference. Research data and jobs from across the Texas A&M system land in the same environment, where labs can scale from interactive debugging to 240-GPU runs lasting up to 72 hours. That architecture let Dr. Reid Powell launch a 10.4 million-compound virtual screen within minutes of receiving access, and it gives the wider university a repeatable way to support drug discovery, genomics, AI training, and classroom workloads at production scale.

Data flow

University projects and datasets are staged into DDN storage, scheduled through Slurm and the quality-of-service framework, and executed on the DGX SuperPOD across Hopper GPUs. Results flow back to researchers for compound triage, inference, education, and follow-on experiments across the Texas A&M system.

Solution architecture

5 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD Provides the shared high-performance cluster architecture behind the VISION research platform.
    • NVIDIA Hopper GPUs Supply the large-scale accelerated compute used for virtual screening, AI training, and other university workloads.
  2. Storage
    • DDN high-performance storage Feeds the GPU cluster with the data throughput needed for large, multi-institution workloads.
  3. Orchestration
    • NVIDIA Base Command Manager Handles cluster provisioning, lifecycle management, and operational visibility for the shared environment.
    • Slurm Schedules diverse interactive and large-scale batch jobs across the university's GPU resources.

Architecture clues

  • A beta cohort of 118 projects across six partner institutions is waiting to be provisioned
  • Dedicated Kubernetes nodes support containerized inference workloads
  • Powell pre-staged Slurm scripts and launched a full run within 15 minutes of receiving access
  • Uses an 11-tier quality-of-service framework with allocations up to 240 GPUs for 72 hours

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
