University of Pennsylvania

Penn needed shared AI infrastructure that could support researchers across many disciplines without weeks-long wait times, fragmented storage, or the cost barriers that kept frontier-scale training and inference off campus.

1.5 years of compute time reduced to three days for a 40,000-document project
120,000 GPU hours monthly at roughly $1 per GPU hour
12x speedup in vision-language-action model training
14x increase in daily experimental throughput

Business outcome

Penn cut wait times from weeks to hours, delivered a 12x speedup in vision-language-action model training, raised experimental throughput 14x, reduced a 40,000-document analysis project from 1.5 years of compute to three days, and now serves about 950 researchers across 200 groups with 120,000 GPU hours per month at roughly $1 per GPU hour.

Solution

Penn built a university-wide AI research platform called Betty on NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD so researchers across robotics, biomedicine, genomics, and other fields could use the same high-performance infrastructure. The deployment combines NVIDIA DGX B200 systems, NVIDIA InfiniBand networking, a VAST Data 15x10 array for multi-petabyte storage, and dark-fiber connectivity back to campus through a Flexential colocation site. NVIDIA Mission Control provides cluster-wide observability, while the scheduling layer uses both Slurm for traditional HPC workloads and NVIDIA Run:ai for AI-native training and inference. This architecture lets Penn ingest large research datasets, keep GPUs fed at high throughput, and serve many labs from one governed platform instead of isolated departmental clusters.

Data flow

Research datasets move into the VAST Data array and are accessed over InfiniBand by DGX B200 nodes inside the DGX SuperPOD. Slurm and Run:ai schedule different classes of jobs onto the shared cluster, while Mission Control monitors health and utilization so operators can optimize experiments and return capacity to the wider Penn research community.

  1. Compute
    • NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD Provides the integrated cluster platform that consolidates campus AI training and inference workloads into a shared research environment.
    • NVIDIA DGX B200 systems Supply the GPU compute nodes used for large-scale training, inference, and AI-for-science experiments.
    • NVIDIA InfiniBand Delivers the low-latency, high-speed fabric connecting DGX compute nodes across the SuperPOD.
  2. Storage
    • VAST Data 15x10 array Stores multiple petabytes of research data and serves read/write throughput high enough to keep the GPU cluster continuously fed.
  3. Orchestration
    • Slurm Schedules traditional HPC jobs on the shared cluster for researchers who need batch-style compute access.
    • NVIDIA Run:ai Schedules AI-native workloads and inference services so multiple research groups can share the same GPU infrastructure efficiently.
  4. Governance
    • NVIDIA Mission Control Provides cluster-wide telemetry on health, utilization, and GPU performance so operators can tune workloads and capacity.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    5 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
