Digital Green needed to extend scarce agricultural advisory expertise to far more farmers in rural communities without sacrificing the local accuracy, language coverage, and human review required for high-stakes farming decisions.

100x reduction in cost of traditional extension services, from $35 per farmer to $0.35 cents per farmer
Nearly 8,000 farmer-to-farmer training videos in more than 50 languages
Over 4,500 extension agents using Farmer.Chat across Kenya and India
Videos increased farmer income by an average of 24 percent

Solution

Digital Green built Farmer.Chat on OpenAI technology to turn years of agricultural-extension content into an interactive advisory system for extension workers. The first version used GPT-4 with retrieval-augmented generation to combine Digital Green’s library of nearly 8,000 farmer-training videos with government-partner sources such as video transcripts, annotated call-center logs, and crop-research factsheets. India’s Ministry of Agriculture validates the knowledge base, and the initial deployment deliberately placed Farmer.Chat in the hands of extension agents rather than directly with farmers so another layer of human review could catch errors. Digital Green then expanded the system with a Farmer.Chat GPT in ChatGPT, multimodal crop-photo input, real-time weather and market information, and Assistants API integrations for channels like WhatsApp and Telegram, allowing local-language guidance to reach more field workers at much lower cost.

Data flow

Training videos, transcripts, call-center logs, crop factsheets, weather data, market information, and crop photos are fed into Farmer.Chat’s RAG workflow. GPT-4 then returns localized guidance for extension agents, who review recommendations before passing them on to farmers through field channels and messaging apps.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • GPT-4 Supplies the reasoning engine for question answering over agricultural knowledge sources.
  2. Serving
    • Farmer.Chat Provides the core agricultural-extension chatbot used by extension workers in India and Kenya.
    • Farmer.Chat GPT Extends the chatbot inside ChatGPT with multimodal crop diagnosis and richer interactions.
  3. Orchestration
    • Assistants API Brings Farmer.Chat capabilities into interfaces already used by extension workers, such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

Architecture clues

  • Digital Green is testing an Agri-LLM and using Assistants API for WhatsApp and Telegram delivery
  • Farmer.Chat uses RAG over Digital Green and government-partner knowledge sources
  • India’s Ministry of Agriculture validates documents in the knowledge base
  • Initial rollout positioned the chatbot as an assistant to extension agents rather than direct-to-farmer automation

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
