Arolsen Archives

Document Processing

Arolsen Archives needed to digitize and index an enormous Holocaust archive far faster than manual translation, transcription, cataloging, and validation methods allowed, or it would take decades to make the records broadly accessible online.

Solution

Accenture and Arolsen Archives built an AI-assisted document-processing workflow to speed the indexing of Holocaust-related records while keeping historians and volunteers in the loop. The solution uses cloud-based technologies, optical character recognition, and AI and machine learning techniques to analyze archive documents ranging from prisoner lists and transfer records to tracing requests submitted by families. Each extracted field receives a confidence score so clearly readable documents can be processed quickly while lower-confidence cases are routed for human validation. Feedback from volunteers and historians is then fed back into the system so the models learn how to interpret difficult handwriting, degraded documents, and inconsistent formats over time. The workflow also clusters similar documents for easier review and replaces a slow, four-person validation pattern with a collaborative human-plus-machine process.

Data flow

Archive documents are digitized and read through OCR, then processed by AI and machine learning models that extract fields such as names and assign confidence scores. High-confidence outputs move forward quickly, while lower-confidence cases are reviewed by volunteers and historians whose feedback is fed back into the system so later documents can be interpreted more accurately and clustered for faster review.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Ingest
    • optical character recognition (OCR) Reads archive documents so names and other fields can be extracted from scanned records.
  2. Compute
    • AI and machine learning Interpret extracted fields, assign confidence levels, and improve accuracy from volunteer and historian feedback.
    • cloud-based technologies Provide the scalable environment that supports document analysis, clustering, and collaborative processing.
  3. Orchestration
    • AI-powered automation solution Coordinates extraction, confidence scoring, and iterative learning across the document-indexing workflow.

Architecture clues

  • Each extracted field receives a confidence score.
  • Human feedback is fed into lower-confidence documents so the AI improves over time.
  • The system combines volunteers, historians, OCR, and AI in a shared processing loop.
  • The workflow clusters similar documents for easier and more accurate readings.

Evidence from the source

"Arolsen has seen a 40-fold increase in productivity."
"Human feedback from these documents is then fed into documents with lower levels of confidence so the AI can better interpret them."
"Prior to the new solution, an Arolsen Archives volunteer needed roughly 15 minutes to extract and upload each document. With the new AI-based approach, it takes less than 20 seconds."
"The AI solution is shown documents from the Archives, and a 'confidence' level is assigned to each field"
"a cutting-edge use case was created that leverages cloud-based technologies, optical character recognition (OCR) solutions and the latest AI and machine learning (ML) techniques."

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence92%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability23/25
11 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
