Draftwise

Document Processing · Enterprise Knowledge Search

Draftwise needed to help lawyers draft and negotiate contracts faster by grounding answers and clause suggestions in clients' contracts, communications, and related documents, while still meeting the legal market's expectations for privacy, security, and highly accurate retrieval.

Solution

Draftwise built its Smart Draft contract-drafting product on Cohere models delivered through Microsoft Azure AI Foundry. The workflow uses a retrieval-augmented generation architecture so legal teams can search their own contracts, communications, and prior agreements instead of relying on generic model output. Cohere Embed creates semantic representations across source material, including images, diagrams, tables, and graphs, so lawyers can retrieve precedent by meaning rather than keywords. Cohere Rerank then orders the candidate passages to put the strongest clauses and examples on top, and Cohere Command generates drafting language in a natural interface while citing source documents. Running the stack on Azure let Draftwise combine trusted infrastructure with enterprise-grade search, grounded generation, and multilingual legal support inside one contract workflow.

Data flow

Client contracts, communications, and related legal documents are indexed semantically with Cohere Embed; when a lawyer asks Smart Draft for a clause or draft, Azure AI Foundry retrieves candidate passages, Cohere Rerank reorders them by relevance, and Cohere Command produces grounded contract language with citations back to the original material.

Solution architecture

5 components · 4 layers
  1. Ingest
    • Cohere Embed Turns source documents and queries into semantic representations for retrieval over legal content.
  2. Compute
    • Cohere Command Generates contract language and can cite the source documents used in the draft.
    • Cohere Rerank Reorders retrieved passages so the most relevant clauses and examples appear first.
  3. Serving
    • Smart Draft Provides the contract-drafting interface where lawyers search, draft, and review grounded contract language.
  4. Orchestration
    • Microsoft Azure AI Foundry Hosts and delivers Cohere models inside the Azure environment Draftwise already trusted.

Architecture clues

  • Cohere Command provides citations to source documents inside the drafting workflow.
  • Cohere Embed can process images, diagrams, tables, and graphs instead of only text.
  • Draftwise built a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system for legal drafting.

Evidence from the source

Cohere boosted search quality by 30%, giving lawyers the right proprietary data at their fingertips.
Draftwise needed a strong retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system to power its contract generation tool, Smart Draft.
Draftwise selected Cohere's models for their quality, accuracy, and search retrieval capabilities, and subsequently built its RAG system using three powerful Cohere models: Command, Embed, and Rerank.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value95/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale5/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence94%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability25/25
12 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
