St James's Hospital

Real-time Analytics

St James's Hospital needed to modernize aging laboratory infrastructure because legacy on-premises systems slowed genomic diagnostics, limited storage for sequencing data, complicated ISO 15189 compliance and reduced the speed and resilience required for cancer care and research.

Solution

St James's Hospital worked with EY and Microsoft to replace legacy laboratory infrastructure with a bespoke cloud platform for genomic diagnostics. The team migrated on-premises data infrastructure to Azure so high volumes of genome-sequencing data could be stored, protected and accessed more efficiently across laboratory teams. Multiple laboratory systems, analyzers and equipment were connected into the new environment, while cloud-based genome sequencing tools gave scientists continuous access to data and results. Microsoft Fabric added parallel data-analysis pipelines and automated overnight processes, and machine learning was used to derive critical insights from genomic data for diagnosis and treatment planning. The architecture improved backup resilience, strengthened security controls and supported ISO 15189 requirements while making cancer-screening and molecular-testing workflows faster, more scalable and easier to operate.

Data flow

Patient specimens are sequenced and the resulting genomic data is stored in Azure, where multiple laboratory systems feed the cloud environment. Microsoft Fabric runs parallel analysis pipelines and automated overnight processes, machine learning derives clinically relevant insights, and laboratory scientists use the cloud-based sequencing tools to retrieve results and report findings across the service.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value95/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale5/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence85%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability25/25
