Solution

Refik Anadol Studio built the Large Nature Model on Google Cloud using Vertex AI, Gemini 2.5 Flash, BigQuery, and Google Cloud Storage. Vertex AI orchestrates the image-processing pipeline, handling preprocessing, object detection, and embedding generation in parallel so the team can prepare huge visual datasets far faster than before. Gemini 2.5 Flash then generates richer, more scientifically accurate captions for each image, turning raw visuals into semantically meaningful training data rather than generic tags. Google Cloud Storage holds the petabyte-scale archive and metadata record system, while BigQuery lets the team query billions of image-caption pairs in seconds for retrieval and analysis. This stack gave Refik Anadol Studio the speed, accuracy, and scale needed to turn a massive image corpus into a living, queryable nature encyclopedia that can power generative art and RAG-style interactions inside DATALAND.

Data flow

Images are stored in Google Cloud Storage, then processed in Vertex AI for object detection and embeddings. Gemini 2.5 Flash creates captions for the same data, and the resulting image-caption pairs are queried through BigQuery for retrieval, analysis, and downstream model use.

Solution architecture

4 components · 2 layers
  1. Compute
    • Vertex AI Orchestrates preprocessing, object detection, and embedding generation across the large image archive.
    • Gemini 2.5 Flash Generates accurate, context-rich captions that add semantic meaning to every image in the dataset.
  2. Storage
    • BigQuery Stores and queries large-scale image-caption data for retrieval, analysis, and model support.
    • Google Cloud Storage Holds the petabyte-scale image archive and associated metadata records.

Architecture clues

  • BigQuery and Cloud Storage provide the retrieval-ready memory layer
  • Gemini 2.5 Flash replaced a weaker open-source captioning model
  • The platform supports RAG-like workflows for DATALAND
  • Vertex AI orchestrates a multi-stage image-processing pipeline

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value95/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth20/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence82%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability23/25
11 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance0/10
The publication date has no documented provenance.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
