Solution

Crédit Mutuel trained IBM Watson on banking and insurance language by feeding it output from four virtual assistants and an email analyzer plus 50,000 lines of dialogue. The bank rolled the system out progressively across lines of business so advisors could use AI inside everyday service workflows rather than as a separate experiment. Watson, watsonx Assistant, Watson Discovery and Watson Natural Language Understanding help advisors retrieve the right product information, answer routine customer questions and enrich inbound email handling for insurance, savings and investment products. Instead of expecting staff to memorize roughly 200 offerings, the architecture turns prior conversations and reference knowledge into a searchable decision-support layer that serves 20,000 advisors in 5,000 branches and keeps improving as business experts train it on new inquiries.

Data flow

Online inquiries and emails flow through four virtual assistants and a Watson-based email analyzer, which use trained banking and insurance vocabulary plus dialogue history to surface the right answers for advisors and accelerate responses to customers.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding Interprets banking and insurance language in customer requests and email content.
    • IBM Watson Coordinates the trained question-answering workflow used by assistants, email analysis and advisor support.
  2. Storage
    • IBM Watson Discovery Provides the searchable knowledge base used to retrieve product and service information.
  3. Serving
    • watsonx Assistant Runs the virtual assistant interactions that help advisors and customers handle routine service questions.

Architecture clues

  • Business experts continue training the system on thousands of customer inquiries after go-live.
  • The rollout proceeded progressively across lines of business rather than as a single big-bang launch.
  • The solution combines virtual assistants with an email analyzer to support both synchronous and asynchronous service channels.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    4 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
