Honda needed a faster way to transfer skilled engineering knowledge into its Advanced Expert System because converting internal PowerPoint materials into reusable knowledge models for vehicle-development reviews was too manual and slow to scale across thousands of parts.

Solution

Honda worked with IBM to use generative AI for extracting engineering know-how from Microsoft PowerPoint materials and turning it into reusable knowledge for its Advanced Expert System. The source documents contained diagrams and graphs but relatively little text, which made them difficult to reuse with conventional AI techniques. IBM proposed a multimodal approach in IBM watsonx.ai that converts graphical and diagram-heavy content into text, stores the resulting know-how in a database, and then supports retrieval-augmented-generation-style knowledge access. A pilot run from November to December 2023 validated the approach. The resulting architecture lets Honda move from manually creating handbooks and knowledge models over multi-year timelines toward AI-assisted documentation modeling that can surface engineering guidance faster, reduce rework in collision-safety simulation reviews, and broaden reuse of expert knowledge across the development organization.

Data flow

PowerPoint materials containing engineering diagrams and graphs are processed in watsonx.ai, converted into textual knowledge, stored in a database, and then reused through retrieval-augmented access to support Honda's Advanced Expert System and engineering review workflows.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
