trivago

Enterprise Knowledge Search · IT Operations Automation

trivago needed a secure, EU-compliant way for employees to use generative AI across knowledge work without locking the company to one provider or exposing internal data to public tools, while also reducing the friction of disconnected subscriptions and fragmented enterprise knowledge.

Solution

trivago worked with IBM Consulting to build trivago Copilot as a unified, multi-provider generative AI platform for internal productivity, knowledge access, and workflow execution. IBM Digital Product Design and Engineering Consulting helped the company create a governed cloud-based foundation that supports multiple LLM providers while preserving EU data residency and digital sovereignty. On top of that foundation, trivago connected email, Slack, documentation systems, and task tools into an enterprise search and retrieval-augmented generation experience so employees can ask questions against internal knowledge rather than hunting across systems manually. The platform also executes actions such as sending Outlook emails, summarizing Slack threads, and creating Jira tickets, turning it from passive search into active workflow automation. Company-wide learning sessions and an AI ambassador network drove adoption, making the copilot a routine part of how teams document work, prepare plans, and move from idea to execution without losing control of governance or regional data boundaries.

Data flow

Internal emails, Slack messages, and documentation are indexed into trivago Copilot, RAG retrieves the relevant enterprise context, the platform returns grounded responses or triggers actions like Outlook messages and Jira updates, and all interactions remain inside trivago’s controlled EU-resident environment.

Solution architecture

2 components · 2 layers
  1. Serving
    • trivago Copilot Provides the single employee interface for enterprise search, multi-model prompting, and AI-driven task execution across internal systems.
  2. Orchestration
    • IBM Digital Product Design and Engineering Consulting Helped trivago design and scale the governed, multi-provider AI platform and its supporting workflows.

Architecture clues

  • Employees can execute workflows such as Outlook mail and Jira updates directly through the platform.
  • RAG grounds responses in internal data while keeping information inside a controlled EU environment.
  • The platform supports multiple large language model providers rather than a single vendor.

Evidence from the source

“All capabilities were designed with EU data residency in mind”
“Employees can now execute tasks such as sending emails through Outlook, summarizing Slack conversations, and creating or updating Jira tickets through simple prompts.”
“In the third year, in 2025, that figure more than doubled to over 16.6 days per employee”
“This capability was further enhanced through retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), ensuring that AI responses are grounded in trivago’s internal data”
“Today, more than 600 employees actively use the platform, with adoption reaching approximately 90% of the eligible workforce”

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    4 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
