Solution

UTAS partnered with IBM to build the AI CourseMate project as a practical agentic AI layer for higher-education workflows. Students and researchers co-developed the experience in the School of ICT using IBM watsonx.ai to build the assistant logic and IBM watsonx Orchestrate as the central low-code orchestration platform for the agents. Hosted on IBM Cloud, the MVP connected academic content and process context so users could retrieve course information, support research documentation, and move through ethics and administrative tasks from one interface instead of bouncing between manual steps. UTAS also used IBM watsonx.governance to monitor, track, and manage the AI models so the deployment stayed aligned with the university's emphasis on safe, ethical AI. The result was a scalable support pattern that combined retrieval, orchestration, and governance for student and research operations.

Data flow

Course materials, research documentation, ethics-approval context, and administrative inputs are routed through watsonx Orchestrate, watsonx.ai generates responses and task guidance, watsonx.governance tracks model behavior, and the IBM Cloud-hosted MVP returns the result to students and staff.

Solution architecture

4 components · 4 layers
  1. Compute
    • IBM watsonx.ai Provides the AI studio used to build the assistant logic for academic and research workflows.
  2. Serving
    • IBM Cloud Hosts the minimum viable product that serves students, researchers, and staff.
  3. Orchestration
    • IBM watsonx Orchestrate Acts as the core platform for the agents that guide users through academic information and process steps.
  4. Governance
    • IBM watsonx.governance Monitors and manages the AI models used in the university deployment.

Architecture clues

  • The MVP is hosted on IBM Cloud rather than being limited to a classroom sandbox.
  • The university used watsonx.governance to monitor, track, and manage all AI models.
  • watsonx Orchestrate served as the core platform for all agents in the deployment.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
