IBM CIO

Enterprise Knowledge Search

IBM employees needed a faster way to find proposal content across many internal sources because searching sales documents, templates, product guides, and offerings manually slowed proposal creation and made it harder to respond with accurate details quickly.

Reported impact

Business outcome

AskTECHNO reduced proposal-content search effort, improved access to multilingual product knowledge, and created a reusable internal generative-search pattern IBM teams can apply elsewhere.

Solution

IBM Consulting, IBM Software, and the IBM CIO organization built AskTECHNO as a generative-search assistant for proposal management. The platform combines IBM watsonx.ai, IBM Granite-class language models, IBM Watson Discovery, and IBM Cloud Code Engine with curated internal IBM content such as sales documents and proposal artifacts. Watsonx.ai generates answer text from relevant material, Granite supports bilingual search and translation between Japanese and English, Watson Discovery indexes IBM web and content sources, and Cloud Code Engine captures user activity logs for continuous improvement. Using retrieval-augmented generation, AskTECHNO answers employee questions with grounded responses that include source references and publication dates. The result is a multilingual internal search layer that makes proposal knowledge accessible through natural-language questions instead of time-consuming content hunting across disconnected repositories.

Data flow

Internal sales and product content is indexed through Watson Discovery, employees ask questions in Japanese or English, Granite helps interpret and translate those queries, watsonx.ai generates source-backed answers using RAG, and Cloud Code Engine records usage data for tuning and expansion.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • IBM watsonx.ai Generates answers to proposal-related questions using retrieved IBM content.
    • IBM Granite Translates and searches content between Japanese and English for bilingual proposal users.
  2. Serving
    • IBM Watson Discovery Indexes internal and external IBM content so AskTECHNO can retrieve relevant sources.
  3. Orchestration
    • IBM Cloud Code Engine Captures and stores user activity logs to support the assistant's search workflows and improvement loop.

Architecture clues

  • Responses include the original sources and publication or last-updated dates.
  • The assistant uses bilingual generative search across Japanese and English content.
  • The initial release launched in IBM Japan in April 2024 with plans for global expansion.

Evidence from the source

The Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technique enables the digital assistant to use the ingested contents to create responses
The digital assistant was built with IBM watsonx.ai, IBM Granite-class large language models (LLMs), IBM Watson Discovery and IBM Cloud Code Engine
The intention is for all IBM employees to use the application
The responses offered by AskTECHNO include the information sources and when was the information published or last updated.
watsonx.ai helped generate answers to users’ questions while IBM Granite translated users’ queries and searched contents between English and Japanese.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence87%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
