C.H. Robinson

Document Processing · Supply Chain Optimization

C.H. Robinson needed to automate email-heavy shipment workflows because too many customers still submit routine requests through inconsistent emails and PDFs that force employees to spend hours triaging and manually keying orders.

Solution

C.H. Robinson built proprietary AI agents to automate shipment transactions from quoting through pickup, delivery, and in-transit updates. The team started on LangChain for interoperability so they could combine messy customer instructions with order context while retaining the freedom to swap models. As classification between less-than-truckload and full truckload grew more complex, they moved into LangGraph, which made order state easier to understand, track, and update across multi-step workflows. LangGraph Studio then helped prototype and debug those agent interactions visually. The resulting system reads shipping-request emails, connects facts across the email body and attached PDFs, fills in missing information, and creates orders automatically. LangSmith traces the full order-entry process so subject-matter experts and developers can quantify errors, inspect prompts, and catch problems before rollout.

Data flow

Customer emails and attached PDFs enter the proprietary AI workflow, LangChain combines the raw request with order context, LangGraph classifies shipment types and maintains order state while missing details are retrieved, and LangSmith records the end-to-end order-entry trace for review before deployment.

  1. Serving
    • proprietary AI tech Reads shipping emails, extracts details, fetches missing information, and creates orders.
  2. Orchestration
    • LangChain Combines user instructions, order context, and interchangeable model integrations for the agents.
    • LangGraph Tracks and updates order state across complex shipment-classification workflows.
  3. Governance
    • LangSmith Stitches traces through the order-entry flow so issues can be quantified and fixed quickly.

Architecture clues

  • LangGraph was adopted when less-than-truckload versus full truckload classification became more complex.
  • Meta-prompting is used to improve how users provide instructions to the application.
  • Subject-matter experts use LangSmith traces to hand issues back to developers quickly.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
