NVIDIA Education United States

University of Florida

The University of Florida needed to close an AI skills and research-capacity gap across its colleges, but limited access to AI hardware, software, and AI-trained faculty made it difficult to give every discipline meaningful exposure to modern AI methods.

Business outcome

UF installed the largest AI supercomputer at a university in 90 days, trained a 3.9B-parameter clinical model that cut misclassification by 24 percent, expanded AI coursework across every undergraduate major, and secured funding to hire 100 AI-focused faculty so research and workforce development can scale together.

Solution

UF took a whole-university approach to AI by pairing curriculum reform with a shared NVIDIA supercomputing platform. The school created a cross-college steering committee, secured state and donor funding, and then installed HiPerGator AI as an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD made up of 140 DGX A100 systems plus 17,920 CPUs. That shared compute foundation now supports frontier research such as GatorTron, a 3.9B-parameter clinical language model trained on 82 billion words and electronic health record data, and SynGator, a synthetic clinical data generator. Around the platform, UF launched an AI Research Catalyst Fund, elective AI courses in every undergraduate major, a universitywide AI certificate, a professional microcredential, and large-scale faculty upskilling through NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Institute. The result is an AI education and research operating model that combines centralized compute, new faculty capacity, and curriculum integration instead of isolating AI inside computer science alone.

Data flow

University datasets and research projects run on HiPerGator AI, DGX A100 systems train models such as GatorTron and SynGator, and the resulting infrastructure and expertise feed back into AI courses, certificates, faculty programs, and interdisciplinary research across UF’s colleges.

Architecture clues

  • HiPerGator AI became the largest AI supercomputer installed at a university at the time of deployment.
  • The platform supports both clinical NLP models and synthetic clinical data generation projects such as SynGator.
  • UF used a shared steering committee and pooled funding across all 16 colleges to drive adoption.

Evidence from the source

Completed in 90 days, the installation became the largest AI supercomputer installed at a university.
More than 10X larger than the second-largest clinical model, it reduced misclassification by 24 percent from BERT-large in the i2b2-2010 named-entity recognition benchmark.
The state of Florida provided $100 million in funding for UF to build a new data center and $15 million per year to hire 100 new AI faculty.
UF was the first university in the country to introduce AI curricula across disciplines, offering elective AI courses in every undergraduate major.
Using their DGX SuperPOD, UF developed the largest clinical language model to date, GatorTron, with 3.9 billion parameters.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
