Solution
CodeRabbit built a multi-step review pipeline around OpenAI models so code review happens with richer context and more automation than a human-only process can sustain. When a developer opens a pull request, CodeRabbit clones the repository into a sandbox, enriches the diff with code history, linters, code-graph signals, issue tickets, and developer conversations, and then runs recursive review passes across that material. o4-mini and o3 handle reasoning-heavy bug finding, refactors, and architecture issues across multiple files, while GPT-4.1 uses its long context window for summaries, docstrings, and routine QA checks. Customer-specific prompts add each team's review rules, security posture, and best practices, and the system now also surfaces reviews directly inside VS Code so engineers can act before code reaches the final merge gate.
Data flow
A pull request enters CodeRabbit, which clones the repo into a sandbox and enriches the diff with history, linter output, code-graph context, tickets, and conversations. OpenAI models run multiple review passes, then the resulting comments and summaries are surfaced in pull requests or directly inside VS Code.
