Duolingo

Duolingo needed to close important learning gaps in conversation practice and personalized grammar explanation because scripted chats and earlier AI approaches were not flexible or accurate enough for immersive language learning.

Solution

Duolingo integrated GPT-4 into a new subscription tier, Duolingo Max, to add richer conversational practice and contextual feedback to its language-learning platform. The company created Role Play, which serves as an AI conversation partner, and Explain my Answer, which breaks down why a learner made a mistake and can continue the explanation through follow-up questions. Learner prompts, lesson context, and mistakes flow into GPT-4, which generates a back-and-forth dialogue or grammar explanation, then returns those responses directly into the course experience so students can continue learning without leaving the app. Duolingo had previously experimented with GPT-3, but GPT-4 provided enough accuracy and flexibility to handle open-ended conversations and more reliable grammar support. That made it possible to move from static scripted exchanges toward a far more adaptive tutoring layer inside the product.

Data flow

Learner responses and lesson context are passed into GPT-4, which returns either a conversational exchange through Role Play or a tailored explanation through Explain my Answer, and those outputs are delivered back into the Duolingo lesson flow for continued practice.

Solution architecture

4 components · 2 layers
  1. Compute
    • GPT-4 Generates conversational practice and contextual explanations for learner mistakes.
  2. Serving
    • Role Play Acts as an AI conversation partner for immersive language practice.
    • Explain my Answer Breaks down mistakes and supports follow-up questions about grammar and usage.
    • Duolingo Max Packages the GPT-4-powered learning features into Duolingo's premium subscription experience.

Architecture clues

  • Duolingo previously experimented with GPT-3 before moving to GPT-4
  • GPT-4 responses are evaluated by how deep a learner needs to go before returning to the lesson
  • The first rollout focused on Spanish and French in Duolingo Max

Evidence from the source

Duolingo turned to OpenAI's GPT-4 to advance the product with two new features: Role Play... and Explain my Answer
GPT-4 gives us far more confidence in the accuracy of AI responses in Explain my Answer
GPT-4 has learned from enough public data to create a flexible back and forth for the learner
The features we've put together have come out faster than they would have before GPT-4

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence90%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability23/25
