Solution

BCG worked with ZEISS Medical Technology to build a proof-of-concept generative-AI application for ophthalmology practices. After assessing a hundred possible GenAI use cases, the joint team selected patient-inquiry response generation and built the first version in eight weeks. The application ingests patient-submitted content forms and self-test forms, retrieves relevant facts from a library of approved Zeiss marketing and patient materials, and uses Azure OpenAI with LangChain, vector databases, and LLM agent techniques to draft responses. BCG and the Zeiss AI team refined the workflow in agile iterations using customer insights and tester feedback, while responsible-AI guardrails and human validation checked output quality. The result is a validated assistant that can produce personalized, patient-ready answers while staying grounded in approved source content.

Data flow

Patient-submitted content forms and self-test forms enter the application, which retrieves relevant passages from approved Zeiss marketing and patient materials stored for RAG. LangChain and LLM agent logic orchestrate the workflow, Azure OpenAI generates draft responses, and validated outputs are returned to practices as patient-ready answers or drafts for review.

Solution architecture

4 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • Azure OpenAI Provides the foundation-model inference used to generate draft responses to patient questions.
  2. Storage
    • Vector databases Store approved Zeiss materials so the application can retrieve grounded source content before generating answers.
  3. Orchestration
    • LangChain Coordinates the prompt and application workflow between patient inputs, retrieved content, and model output generation.
    • large language model (LLM) agent technologies Guide the response-generation logic so the application can answer patient questions in a structured way.

Architecture clues

  • BCG and the Zeiss AI team co-developed the application using Azure OpenAI, LangChain, and LLM agent technologies.
  • BCG used agile iterations with customer insights and tester feedback to refine the application.
  • Responsible AI guardrails were used to validate outputs.
  • The listed technologies included Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, and chain-of-thought prompting.
  • The system creates answers from a library of approved Zeiss marketing and patient materials.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence81%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    6 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance0/10
The publication date has no documented provenance.
  • Source transparency10/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
