Solution

IBM created the Privacy and AI Management System (PIMS) as a centralized governance platform built around IBM OpenPages, IBM Knowledge Catalog, IBM Cloud Pak for Data AI Factsheets and, over time, IBM watsonx.governance. OpenPages provides the workflow backbone for governance, risk and compliance activity, while Knowledge Catalog maintains the related data assets and relationships that make privacy and AI information traceable. AI Factsheets in Cloud Pak for Data track machine-learning models from training through production, capturing the metrics and lifecycle evidence needed for monitoring quality, fairness and drift. Regulations and remediation requirements can then be imported into the governance model so PIMS can register algorithmic systems, assess risks, launch compliance campaigns and route follow-up tasks through a single enterprise process. The architecture effectively treats governance as a continuously updated data platform, letting IBM move from ad hoc regional programs to always-on AI and privacy oversight at global scale.

Data flow

Privacy metadata, AI lifecycle records, regulatory requirements and remediation tasks are captured in OpenPages and Knowledge Catalog, model evidence is tracked through AI Factsheets, and dashboards surface the resulting compliance status and actions across IBM's global operations.

Solution architecture

4 components · 2 layers
  1. Storage
    • IBM Knowledge Catalog Stores and curates the governance data, metadata and knowledge assets used by PIMS.
  2. Governance
    • IBM OpenPages Provides the automated workflow and centralized control plane for privacy, AI and GRC processes inside PIMS.
    • IBM Cloud Pak for Data Supplies AI Factsheets that track models from training to production and capture risk-monitoring evidence.
    • IBM watsonx.governance Represents the next-generation governance layer IBM plans to use for broader model lifecycle and benchmarking capabilities.

Architecture clues

  • IBM uses PIMS as part of its broader Integrated Governance Program spanning privacy, AI, ethics and data clearance.
  • PIMS tracks AI systems from design to deployment to everyday use rather than focusing only on point-in-time audits.
  • The governance model can import new regulations and automatically drive remediation through existing workflows.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value75/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact0/25
    0 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence87%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity8/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
