Solution

UHCW NHS Trust worked with IBM and SCC on a proof-of-concept called People Assist that combines IBM watsonx Assistant with IBM watsonx.ai to provide 24x7 workforce self-service. Watsonx Assistant delivers the employee-facing interface, while watsonx.ai performs retrieval-augmented generation over HR policy documentation so the assistant can summarize relevant guidance and return answers to common questions. The tool acts as a one-stop shop for policy lookups and routine transactional support instead of forcing staff to wait on email queues or office hours. Because the system is grounded in the Trust's own documentation, it improves consistency as well as speed, and it creates a reusable pattern for future HR automation beyond the pilot. In architectural terms, People Assist sits between users and policy content, using RAG to transform static documents into an interactive service layer for the workforce function.

Data flow

Employees submit HR questions to People Assist, watsonx Assistant routes the request, watsonx.ai retrieves and summarizes relevant Trust policy documentation with RAG, and the response is returned through the self-service interface at any time of day.

Solution architecture

2 components · 2 layers
  1. Compute
    • IBM watsonx.ai Uses retrieval-augmented generation over HR policy documents to summarize and answer employee questions.
  2. Serving
    • IBM watsonx Assistant Provides the employee-facing virtual assistant for HR queries and routine workforce tasks.

Architecture clues

  • The front end is built with watsonx Assistant and grounded on HR policy documentation through RAG.
  • The pilot was designed first as a proof of concept for workforce queries.
  • Usage outside office hours shows the platform acts as a true 24x7 service layer.

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value90/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact15/25
    1 metric describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    5 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
