Solution
Canva used GPT-4 and the OpenAI API as part of the foundation for Magic Studio, an integrated AI creative suite designed to keep generation simple even as multimodal capabilities expand. Magic Write handles outlining, rewriting, summarization, grammar improvement, and text generation across languages, while Magic Design combines OpenAI outputs with Canva’s own AI design engine and a library of over 100 million assets and templates to create presentations, videos, and social posts from prompts. Magic Switch then uses OpenAI API and vision capabilities to parse existing designs and convert them across formats, languages, and layouts, such as turning a poster into a French presentation or summarizing a whiteboard into another deliverable. Beyond the core suite, Canva also built a native DALL·E app and a Canva GPT inside ChatGPT, giving users more ways to create assets conversationally while preserving trust-and-safety controls across the platform.
Data flow
User prompts and existing design assets flow into Magic Studio, where Magic Write handles text, Magic Design composes new visuals from prompts, and Magic Switch parses or converts existing artifacts. Outputs are then served back through Canva or through the Canva GPT for conversational creation.
